Even though their candidate fell just short in the U.S. Senate race, the Louisiana Democratic Party is feeling a lot more optimistic today than it did just weeks ago. Louisiana House Democratic Caucus Chairman Kyle Green says the closeness of what was expected to be a Julia Letlow blowout is something that he and his fellow Democrats saw coming.
“We saw it after the Callais decision. We saw it with what the governor, how he took unprecedented steps to stop an election in its tracks; the assaults that occurred on the City of New Orleans; people are just fed up,” Green said.
Democrats are now looking to ride that momentum into next year’s state legislature elections. While it’s unlikely that Democrats can win enough seats to gain control of the House or the Senate, Green says he’s confident that Democrats can break the Republican supermajority in either one of those two.
“I do believe that if we are able to field good candidates in respective districts and speak to the issues that people care about, which are their pocketbook issues, I think breaking that is well within reach,” Green explained.
As he conceded the Senate race Tuesday, Jamie Davis hinted that he may run for governor next year to unseat Jeff Landry. Green says while Davis has more than proved himself to be a very viable candidate, party leadership will offer voters a choice.
“They can ask themselves a question next year: Are they better off now than they were four years ago? I look forward to having that conversation with voters,” Green said.
