Early voting for the November third election wraps up Tuesday. In the first five days of early voting, more than 363,000 voters have cast ballots, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans by more than 13,000. John Couvillon with JMC Analytics and Polling says he expects the Democratic lead to increase between now and the end of early voting.
“Every time I’ve ever followed early voting, the last day is always very heavily Democratic; and given that I’ve seen elevated Democratic enthusiasm, that elevation is going to become a capital ‘E’ on Tuesday’s early voting, maybe even today,” Couvillon said.
Also added in the mix is more than 62,000 ballots cast by no-party voters – and with President Trump’s approval rating greatly underwater, it’s not unreasonable to believe the vast majority of those voters may have cast their ballots for Democratic candidates. Couvillon says Republicans may be starting to sound the alarm.
“If the Republicans are to be concerned, which I think they should be, then today they absolutely need to be doing all they can to turn out the voters; and we’ll know the answer to that for sure tomorrow morning,” Couvillon noted.
In the Congressional races, the most competitive ones are in districts 5 and 6, both of which are races to fill seats being vacated by their respective incumbents. While Republicans make up the lion’s share of the candidates in both of those races, Couvillon says Democrats are almost guaranteed to get one of their candidates into the runoff in both.
“The Democrats are energized, number one; and the Democrats also have the remarkable ability to not allow their votes to fragment,” Couvillon explained.
