Even though early voting statistics and a pair of polls showing Julia Letlow and Jamie Davis tied have made things very interesting in Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race, Jeremy Alford with LaPolitics.com says Letlow still goes into Election Day today as the clear favorite.
“Julia Letlow does have the power of incumbency as a House member sitting on Appropriations, and she’s had a very well-organized campaign; so it’s still definitely her campaign to lose,” Alford said.
But Alford says other expected outcomes might not pan out as planned. He says while the last-minute redrawing of the congressional map will likely result in five Republicans and one Democrat representing Louisiana in the House, early voting numbers indicate that it won’t be as easy as anticipated.
“I think a lot of folks had questions about whether we would see Republican vs. Republican runoffs for these two open seats. But with Democratic turnout being the way that it’s been, it seems like a pretty strong chance that we could see D vs. R runoffs in these districts,” Alford explained.
As for the 10 constitutional amendments on the ballot, Alford says with voters rejecting every single proposed amendment in the last two elections, voters may be getting sick and tired of these amendments popping up on their ballots – especially those towards the end.
“Look at the total number of people who voted for constitutional amendment No. 1 and look at the total number of voters for the last constitutional amendment and you’ll see a great difference there; people kind of start to zone out a little bit or just decide to walk away from the ballot,” Alford noted.
