The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a potential disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico near the Bay of Campeche. State Climatologist Jay Grymes says there’s about a 80% chance of a tropical cyclone forming in the next seven days.
“It’s likely to make a move heading to the north, northeast. That could put some measure of jeopardy into southeast Louisiana,” Grymes said.
Grymes says this is something that you should keep monitoring throughout the week.
“It’s nothing to be worried about just yet; and certainly, we’ve got to see what’s going to happen over the next day or two if it really does continue to develop, get better organized,” Grymes noted.
Grymes says while there’s a good chance that this could become Tropical Storm Isaias, it’s unlikely that it will strengthen into a hurricane.
“Still, an awful lot of wind shear out there; plus, we’ve still got the dry air component to deal with,” Grymes explained.
So far, there have been no hurricanes in the Atlantic this year – only eight tropical storms. In the satellite era, we had never entered the month of October without a hurricane until this year.
